Stu is a photographic artist who works with themes of voice, ownership, nature, age and the progression of time in his work.  He uses both digital and medium-format film cameras to create autobiographical self-portraits and portraits of others.
He uses props in his work to respond to the themes, and takes a project-based approach to his work.  Stu is red/green colour blind and so he has a preference for working in black and white.  He is inspired by the strong contrast of light and dark in chiaroscuro paintings, and allegorical still life paintings, and how this can be represented using the square dimensions of medium-format photography which have been re-popularised by social media.  He creates atmospheric and subdued portraits with a core philosophy of not retouching skin to ensure the closeness of the photographed sitter to the moment in time the photograph is taken.
